This is a very old antique carved abalone shell that has been made into an Indian Chief face and makes a little trinket bowl. My 86 year old aunt said that my grandmother bought it, I believe, in Seattle from Indians that sit on the corners selling baskets, jewelry and other artifacts. The shell is flattened a little on the bottom so will sit without rocking. The front is carved with detail in feathers and even wrinkles in the old Indian face. In the jaw area, the photo looks like maybe damage, but it is just the character of the shell. It is perfectly flat and you cannot feel any indentations. The little dish is 4 5/8" long and about 3 1/4" across. The dish is in perfect condition. I can not see or feel any chips or nicks. Very unusual and rare!
