ANTIQUE ANGLO INDIAN CARVED COCONUT DIPPING CUPS c1850 A beautiful pair of carved coconut dipping cups. Originating from India and dating to around 1850 or before. From the superior quality of the carving, the cups may well be earlier in date. One is carved with rural scenes on the sides and a standing Buddha in the central area. The other cup is carved with flowers and swags of leaves, very French in style and different to the other cup but is obviously a partner to the other one as the rope borders and central cartouche borders are exactly the same. The carving is exquisite, incredibly fine in detail and the carver has signed his work on one cup, it reads: CARVED BY R . GOPAL . SHE NOI . KARKUL. Both cups measure almost 4 inches long x 2.75 inches wide. Condition is very good. One cup appears damaged (see photo 6) but this is the eye of the coconut. There may be an old repair just visable to the right of the eye but very difficult to see.
