This is such a handsome ring! Isn't it? Incredibly good looking, and to use the overused phrase, pictures do not do it justice. The ring is in beautiful condition, , belonged to George Athearn, the prominent hotelier from Oshkosh, my grandmother's second husband. Judging by the style, I have no doubt it's from the 1920's, this ring has the most Art Deco styling I have ever seen! The workmanship on it, the detailing on both sides of the diamond look like they were stolen from the Chrysler building! About as Art Deco as you can get. The ring was last appraised in 1985 by the best jeweler in our burb here, and this is what he said. It has one old style cut diamond, approx, .75 ct, of VS quality, H color. (I have no idea what any of that means, I am just repeating what he has written on the appraisal). I'm getting a weight of 3.6 grams on my trusty little scale here. And a size of either 8 1/2 or 9. I strongly doubt there are many of these around, it's an outstanding ring from such a dynamic time in our history. It's been hidden away here now for over half a century. We're going to be moving soon, so I'm selling a few things to help pay for the moving expenses. I might be listing a platinum antique Hamilton watch, not sure yet. My plan is to sell a couple items, then will pull the auctions of what is remaining for us to keep as it should be. Thanks!
PS.....In a couple of the pictures, there is some discoloration on the gold. That is not the case in reality. The gold on the ring is fine,,,,I'm not sure why that is showing up that way, but I'm no genius at photo editing to fix it. The only "flaws" that I can discern at all, is a a few very minor surface scratches from normal wear, but they are so minor that you'd really have to be a little OCD to even pick them up. Otherwise, the ring is in remarkable condition for an antique piece of fine jewelry. Very much so.
