I am continuing to list more of my precious vintage and antique textiles almost daily, please have a look at all the treasures!
This auction is for another Assuit net shawl from Upper Egypt, 100 years old. It is referred to as a Coptic shawl, the Copts being the Orthodox Christians that have lived throughout the Middle East for two thousand years. Coptic work is distinguished by figural vs. abstract (Islamic) designs. Small silver strips are individually applied by hand, woven in and flattened into small packets that decorate the cotton/linen mesh with sparkly patterns. The fabric flows and drapes with the weight of the metal and the bias of the tulle, looking alternately transparent and solid, like lame'. This shawl is very sparkly, showing rows of houses, animals, women, wheat and what look to me to be a row of large palaces, or possibly mosques (#8)! These buildings are oversized and quite remarkable. The rows are rather haphazard and do not repeat regularly (#5 through #7). Some of the rows look as if the artist wandered off and didn't finish their work. Such is the charm of the "Tulle-bi-Telli! Assuit net is notoriously difficult to photograph, and is most fascinating when in motion, and under spotlights or by candle light. By natural daylight the colors and patterns are easier to see. This shawl is the color of extra bittersweet dark chocolate, the really expensive kind. Yum. Details as follow: Width: 29" Length: 84" Weight: 15 ounces, almost a pound! I store my textiles clean, and rolled in acid free tissue paper. Before listing for sale I wash , dry flat and examine carefully for condition. This shawl has about a dozen small old repairs of a few stitches each. There are a few additional thread breaks, but the net is strong, and not brittle or weakened. It is in fine wearable condition. Minimal tarnishing. The auction is for the shawl only, and doesn't include the caftan pictured. This is not the heaviest or most complex of its kind, but it is lovely, and has a lot of folk art appeal. As I have said: they are ALL fabulous!! Starting low and offered with no reserve; wearable textile art or to add to your collection.
