This hand-knotted (with the tiniest of perfect tied knots) wool rug is old. It has an interesting mix of art nouveau and a gentle oriental theme throughout. There are two rather plump "creatively" designed whimsical insects guarding each fringed end (see photos 2 and 4), a large leaf with five tiny leaves within that leaf and crazy flowers extended from the tops of the leaf, rich coffee-bean brown highlights, tiny pops of cobalt blue interspersed... this goes on. One could get "lost" in the details and spend an inordinate amount of time studying the intricacies. This has been cleaned and then was rolled out under a bed so received no wear thereafter except on two short sides... and that wear was without shoes. It changes its looks from different angles... it has a creamy look with a "topping" of faint sunny yellow... and I believe it is just a reflection of "age" as there is no hint of these hues on the reverse. It has no spots that I can find. The fringe is showing its age, especially on one end but it is still tight and strong and should have many years of use remaining... the field has no wear, just the gentle patina of age. The edges are all extremely tightly bound, well in place and as strong as when made. It measures exactly, including the fringe, 132" long and is 87 1/2" wide. Dense and heavy, its reverse side is almost more fascinating than the top... it is a fine solid work of art... it's most unique and just beautiful. Added to this item is an old pottery "wood" duck which is a fabulous hanger.
