This auction is for an amazing & rare find, An Art Nouveau 14kt Gold Watch Chain & Slide with portrait of Medusa in solid 12kt (at least) yellow gold. The chain is very long at 42" long laid out flat and 21" long doubled. it is solid 14kt Yellow gold and made with sturdy chain links. It has a 1/2" watch hook that is strong enough to support pretty much any sized pocket watch or for that matter any pendant that you may want to wear. The necklace is so easy to wear, just slip it on over your head, and looks amazing on, it hangs down to the waist area, a true victorian chain! The chain has numerous hallmarks showing the gold content at 14kt gold and it has been professionally tested as 14kt solid yellow gold, not plated or filled. Because it is so long it can be worn in so many different ways and you can add any pendant to this lovely treasure. The chain is so well made and sturdy, it is not a delicate or little necklace but a sturdy strong one. The necklace is a real antique and not a repo but the real deal. The slide is the amazing find though, It is crafted out of solid yellow gold that tests at 12kt gold at least. The art nouveau slide is handmade and so rare and unusual, it depicts a picture of a woman who is Medusa, but not just any Medusa, she is a copy of the ancient statue: The Medusa Rondanini, that was carved in the 4th or 5th century BC! The medusa Rondanini is shown to have wings in her snake hair and the snakes wrap around her chin and end in a tie around her chin, And thats exactly how this lovely and tortured woman is portrayed as well! The facial expression is very tortured or languished and it is truely amazing that the expert goldsmith was able to capture this detail........So Cool, So Rare. I just love this Chain & Slide, but as with most of my favorite items, I do not like to wear her, for one thing she does attract a lot of attention but mostly I just do not want to lose her or harm her!! One of my Jewelers wanted to buy her but wanted to remove the chain and put the slide on a modern necklace and I just can't see that happening, they have been together too long to just discard the chain!! Anyways on with the auction, the slide has 3 blue gemstones that appear to be natural sapphires, but it is very hard to tell for sure because of the way they are set. They are recess set in wax and they are very secure. The slide is 1/2" across and 1/4" thick with the portrait extending a little above the 1/4 mark. It is a heavy well made slide, not like some of the smaller or lighter ones, super nice! Really I could go on & on about this lovely & rare item, it is truely amazing! I wish it was signed, but she is not so I have no idea who made her, if t is anyone out t that has ever seen a slide like this on please get back to me, I would love to know more! T are no hallmarks as well and we did test the slide for 14kt gold and it tested weak, but It is more than 10kt and I quarantee that it is at least solid 12kt yellow gold! 100% Art Nouveau Piece not a reproduction! The necklace & slide weigh 16 grams of solid 14kt & 12kt Yellow Gold. If you collect Art Nouveau or Medusa Items, this one is a must have!
