Nice Early Twentieth Century Arts and Crafts Stained Glass Window
is a classic Arts and Crafts style casement window which was salvaged from an old demolished house near Pittsburgh. The window is datable to about 1900 -1930, by the style of the composition and types of glass used. You can see these patterns in stained glass studio catalogs from this era, as this was a very typey pattern for the era. This is the original wood frame, which was stained dark brown on the interior side and painted brown on the exterior side. The frame is in good, solid condition, and all of the mortise and tenon joints are sound. The size of the total frame is 28 1/4" wide by 28 3/4" tall. The window alone is about 24" wide x 24" tall; a standard size for casement windows from this era. The frame is 1 3/8" thick. This sash still retains its original spring loaded brass latch on one side and cutouts for hinges on the opposite side. The stained side has a few surface scuffs; normal wear and tear, and a slight split in the lower left hand corner, which has been stabilized with a small nail from the side. (see photo 5) The exterior side is fine and the perimeter glazing has been redone. The window is made with lead caming soldered at the joints. T is one horizontal reinforcement bar on the interior side, soldered directly to the leading. On the exterior side, the frame still retains its metal flashing and metal drip edge, which can be removed if so desired. (see photo 4) This window has classic Arts and Crafts/ Art Deco motifs. T are three stylized flowering columns buttressed by long gold segments on either side of each column. The columns are done in a streaky green, light density opalescent glass and the gold parts are also a light density opalescent. The flowers are quite nicely depicted in a streaky violet and blue opalescent glass, and the triad of leaves within them are the same glass as what is found in the stems or columns. The background glass is old clear glass. T are no breaks in any of the glass and the window is flat, without bowing. This window has been restored. The work done on it is as follows: two pieces of glass were replaced, one is well matched and one is perfectly matched to the original glass. The panel has been removed from the frame, flattened, and all broken solder joints repaired, as needed. The window has been regrouted, front and back. Then the reinforcement bar was resoldered back in place. The window was replaced in the frame, using both the original and new tacks, and reglazed into the sash. Then the exterior side was repainted dark brown. To summarize, I would classify this window as an Arts and Crafts window, because of the strong stylization of the floral elements, and the types of glass used. T is also some Art Deco influence in the motifs. It is probably correct to classify it either way. I'm sure it will be a welcome addition to your home; giving your room an historic appeal. The window can be used as an actual window built into the house, or simply displayed in front of an existing window. Anyw you place it, it is sure to bring a lovely welcoming ambience to any space. Stained glass windows also make a perfect gift for your friend who just bought or is renovating an old house. They always give a room a sense of warmth and charm, as well as being a sound investment. This is a perfect addition to a 1920's "bungalow" type of house, but I could see it in a wide variety of contexts. Buyer pays actual charges for shipping + a modest packing and crating fee of $30. The window will be shipped crated and securely padded out in layers of bubble wrap and styrofoam sheets. Local pickup is also welcome (and appreciated). Insurance for the shipment is optional but recommended. PayPal, Money order, and Cashier's check are all acceptable forms of payment. Window is as described, guaranteed to be old and authentic, and is carefully and meticulously packed and crated. I typically overpack, which is the way I would want this to be packed if it were being sent to me. I very much a...
