Antique Arts and Crafts Scenic Stained Glass Windows - Mirror Imaged Pair
is a pair of classic Arts and Crafts scenic windows with a wonderful mix of colors which were salvaged from an old house in Pittsburgh during a renovation. The windows are datable to about 1920 -1930, by the styles of their compositions. The windows' sashes were damaged during their removal, so they are presented without sashes. They are each 24" square. The windows are nice and flat, and the panels retain most of their original grout. They each have two (original) vertical reinforcement bars which are soldered directly to the leading. These panels are mirror images of one another, and probably were mounted on either side of the hearth, (as this was the typical presentation for mirror imaged windows of this size, and from this era). The windows each feature an idyllic landscape scene with a rosy road winding among the surrounding trees and foliage. The scene includes many wonderful types of opalescent glass, including emerald green and gold granite textured hills, trees, and shrubbery, a pink, blue, gold, and cream streaked opalescent sky with a rosy pink opalescent for the cloud. T is also khaki green granite glass in the foreground, whose nubbly texture suggests the details within the grass. The circular border around the scene is a lime and orange streaked opalescent glass. The background glass is a light density, hand poured caramel and cream opalescent glass. The window is also accented by two horizontal borders and two vertical borders which cross each other at the intersections, done in a light density lime green and orange streaked opalescent. (density refers to the amount of light which can pass through the glass, so light density glass has high light transmission, and less opacity) All of the glass is original to the windows, except for one gold background piece in the perimeter border of one window. This blends in very well with the other glass in the window, and was a good match. The windows are in fantastic shape. T are no cracks or breaks in these panels. One small lead was added in the foliage of one of the scenes. The leading is in aged, but good condition, and the solder joints are all intact. The perimeter leading is aged, and crimped in a few places from the old grout, but is all intact. The repair work was done by a professional stained glass studio, and is of high quality, as shown in the photos. (photos 1 -6 are of the left hand window, photos 7 - 10 are of the right hand window, and photo 11 shows both together. T is some wood framing in the background of the last picture - not the ideal way to photograph them, but I did want to show them side by side.) The windows' design is a timeless and nostalgic classic, and the colors are a stellar mix. This pair captures the serene presence of country roads at sunset, and has almost an abstract expressionist feel to them. The windows will be a source of pride and joy to the lucky winner. The windows can be used as actual windows built into the house, or simply hung in front of existing windows (if you create new frames). Stained glass windows also make a perfect gift for your friend who is renovating an old house. They always give a room a sense of warmth and charm, as well as being a sound investment. This is a perfect addition to a 1920's "bungalow" type of house, but I could see it in a wide variety of contexts. Buyer pays actual charges for shipping + a modest crating fee of $40. to offset the materials cost. The windows will be shipped in a custom made crate and securely padded out in layers of bubble wrap and thick styrofoam sheets. Local pickup is also welcome, or local delivery can be made. Insurance on the shipment will be included in the shipping quote for the amount of the sale, unless requested otherwise. Windows are as described, guaranteed to be authentic,(about 80 years old) and are non returnable. I very much appreciate it when buyers pay promptly. Please pay within 6 days of the auction close, otherwise I reserve the right to r...
