Antique ca. 1890-1900 Chinese Roof Tile of a warrior. Made out of Terra Cotta. 19-1/2" tall X 14-1/2" wide X about 8-1/2" deep. Weighs almost 14 pounds!!

Roof tiles were put on roofs of buildings (usually surrounding terra cotta roofs) to offer protection from evil spirits and to attract good fortune. The Chinese believe that the roof of a building is w spirits can land on earth.

This Chinese warrior is wearing a "scaled" uniform"....holding a weapon... and has eyes & noses everyw (supersize pictures). Above his face on his helmet, on his chest, on his belt, on his shoulders, on his pant legs. I interpret this as a way to look and "sense" evil in all directions. This piece is magnificent! In great shape for it's age and fragility of material.

T are chips w the uniform curls up (sleeves and bottom of pants) The worst being Underneath the sleeve on the left side which was glued by someone at some point. I took close up shots (supersize pictures). I also took a picture of the bottom of the base to show you t are chips on the bottom of the feet. Nothing is major and none detract from the beauty of the piece.

This tile was appraised at over $500 (even with above flaws) and I have NO RESERVE!
