Yale & Towne Stockwell Patent Model 707-M Bank Vault Timer Bank Vault timers are beautiful and interesting timepieces that are just starting to be collected. As you might think, they are exceptionally well made - both of necessity, because if they failed, a bank door couldn't be opened - and to overcome fear of bank managers that they might possibly fail. Later units had gangs of two or more clocks so that if one failed any of the others would open the door. Bank vault timers were introduced in the late 1800's to keep bank robbers from forcing bank personnel to open vaults when the bank was closed at night (thus no security around) Horologist Mark Frank has written a scholarly piece on the subject on his website /my_time_lock_collection.htm (in no way related to this auction) Each of these timepieces is built like a vault with heavy plates and very substantial construction. This model has been stored in the open and is in dirty, but good running condition. - A fun collectible. Thanks for bidding, - Reid (Pennsylvania residents must pay 6% sales tax)
