ANTIQUE BED WARMER MADE OF BRASS ON COPPER WITH A WOOD HANDLE - SIZE IS APPROXIMATELY 36 INCHES LONG, 10-1/2 INCHES ACROSS AND 3 INCHES DEEP - HAS " CLARIDGES HOTEL, LONDON " PLATE ON FRONT - HAS SCRATCHES ON WOOD HANDLE AND EXTERIOR TARNISH ON PAN, PARTICULARLY ON BOTTOM - A LITTLE HISTORY ON THE CLARIDGES HOTEL: William and Marianne Claridge started the hotel from a single house in the 1800's. Then in 1854, they bought 5 adjoining building which became the Claridges Hotel in 1856. The hotel was a favorite of heads of state and royalty throughout Europe-it was even visited by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In 1893, it was bought by Richard D'Oyly Carte, owner of the Savoy, and it was significantly redesigned and the hotel reopened in 1898. In 1929, 80 new rooms and a stunning ballroom were added. Oswald Milne, a pioneer of the art deco movement, transformed the lobby. Some of the work done at this time remains to this day. Many exiled heads of state used the Claridges as a refuge during the Second World War . The Kings of Greece, Norway and Yugoslavia stayed there for the duration of the war. In the 1950's, many Hollywood stars adopted the hotel as their home away from home including Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Yul Brynner and Bing Crosby.
