Dan PORO- MASK Liberia / Cote de Ivoire' WOOD: 10" Tall The Dan tribe chiefly inhabit the Cote de Ivoire and Liberia w they arrived in the eighth century B.C. Dan mythology separates the world into 2 entirely separate sps: the sp of the village and the sp of the forest. This wooden mask is one of the myriad types that personify the "Gle", or the spiritual force of the forest. Dan tradition maintains that the Gle dwells in the forest, yet yearns to be welcomed into the village and participate in the lives of the people. This the Gle accomplishes by appearing in the dreams of young male villagers. If the village elders then decide that the Gle's dreamy appearance was of sufficient import, a mask like this is created for the dreamer. The mask is then required at all important occasions.T are many different styles of Dan Gle mask, depending upon the form the Gle took in the dream. As farmers they clear forests or reside in the savannah regions in the North. The Dan arrived around the 8th century from the west and north of the western Sudan. They had the reputation of being fierce warriors, always battling with their neighbours. Originally lacking central government they later created the Go Leopard Society. The Dan believes in a world that is divided into two distinct realms - the village that includes inhabitants and human-made utensils and on the other hand the realm of the forest and its wild animals. The wooden masks represent the incarnate supernatural spiritual force, which manifests as a dream to a male initiate. A council of elders decide if a mask should be created from the dream image to be worn by the dreamer. The presence of the mask is required at any significant event in the tribal group.
