Up for bids is this Antique DESERT SET from ENGLAND dated 1846 with HAND PAINTED BIRDS. This RARE set has the ENGLISH REGISTRY MARK that dates it to June, 1846. Isaw a similar set on the ANTIQUES ROADSHOW. They called it a dessert set. It consists of 1 COMPOTE and 10 PLATES. The compote would be for desserts, sandwiches or fruit. T are 38 different hand painted birds - the compote has 8 and each plate has 3. This set came from an incredible estate auction. Everything in this auction was RARE and of the highest quality. I wish I could have purchased all of it. I sent some items to Sotheby's in New York, but this did not meet their $5,000 minimum. They valued it between $1,500 and $2,000. This set is stunning. Each piece has expertly hand painted birds and ornate gold gilt borders. The compote measures about 4" high and 9 1/4" across it has an English Registry Stamp. The plates measure about 9 1/2" across. The registry mark on the plates is incised on the bottom. They are numbered 5037 in ink. This set is in incredible condition for being over 160 YEARS OLD. The paint and the gilt is in excellent condition. I will list the flaws. T is age crazing in the glaze (mostly on the compote). The compote has a small chip under the rim and one under the base and a couple hairline cracks. T are no chips in the plates. Most are in excellent condition. read more
