Light Emerald Green Glass Demijohn Laid-On (applied) Ring Finish Over Sheered Finish Top 3 Piece Mouth Blown with Tooled Finish and Laid-on Ring aka: String Rim (circa 1820-1840) Not the common olive green color you usually see for a demijohn Size: 20" High X 17" Wide X 11" Deep The laid-on ring finish typically dates from or prior to the 1860s and is particular common on bottles made prior to 1850. 3 piece blown out mold. No Pontil, but hand blown. Circa 1820-40's. The "standard" tooled finish is identified by a side mold seam that distinctly ends or fades out on the neck distinctly below the bottom edge of the finish Demijohn's are a desin favorite for many Mid-century Modern Designers. Used as an anchor to a lovely modern site table. Create your design with one fabulous piece. Condition: Some partination, quite a few air bubbles. In excellent condition considering it's age. I am not an expert. This could also be an european bottle because the majority of European examples are free blown but not all are pontil marked. When a large bottle was blown, and the neck simply sheared off, the bottoms were flattened but t was no need to use the punty rod as the lip required no further finishing. These examples may have an applied string on the neck attached prior to the bottle being sheared from the blow pipe. Sheared lips with applied strings can be found with both smooth fire-polished or rough unfinished lips. Narrow flat collars are more typical of the early European globular-shaped vessels."
