Antique Egermann Czech Glass Set
You are bidding on a set of 4 antique Czech glass pieces created using Egermann's process in the classic cranberry red color. These Bohemian pieces are excellent examples of the Egermann style. Mr. Friedrich Egermann (1777-1864) invented this glass decorating technology which used the motives of shell, stag, and the chateau with his staining and engraving technique. The red coloring on the surface of the pieces is further decorated by baroque patterns which are typical for the region of North Bohemia and are exemplified by the set shown The red staining is a complicated, physical and chemial process during which the elements of silver or copper are thrust into the glass surface at a high temperature causing its tinge several tens of microns under the surface. The staining technique is used in combination with difficult cutting work that divides the compact stained surface into individual panels which are further decorated by engraving. The engraving and cutting processes give the glass a beautiful and subtle texture. This set includes 4 pieces of antique Egermann glass. The photos do not do justice to the vivid red color of this set. The first piece highlighted is a jar with a covered lid. With its top on it measures about 1 3/4 inches tall and 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Its base is clear (not red) and features a stag and a hunting dog on the lid among the classic Bavarian cartouche designs. The lid rests squarely on the container but does fit a little loosely which enhances its handmade, antique feel. On the base t are a couple places w the red stain spilled over onto the clear base. T is minor scratching on the bottom of the base (normal wear) but I could not find any scratches on the main part of the container. On the side of the lid t is one very small scratch and a small chip of glass missing. Overall the piece is in very good condition. Next we have a pair of matching decanters complete with their original stoppers . They each measure about 6 1/4 inches tall with their tops on. Their bases measure 2 1/4 inches in diameter. On the sides are the classic Bavarian cartouche designs with a stag and what appears to be a church (?) or another kind of building inbetween. The bottom of the containers is clear (not stained red). Both of these decanters could benefit from some cleaning on the inside bottom of the container. They are both in very good condition with almost no scratches on them. One of the stoppers has the number 16 scratched into the bottom and its decanter has the number 13 scratched on its base. On the base of the other stopper is carved out a small hole next to which can be seen the Roman numeral II. On the base of that decanter is scratched the number 32. The stoppers each have 3 matching indentations (marks) on the very top. The stoppers both fit well into their decanters and the pair could be used as functional decanters today. These glass decanters have a lovely weight and feel to them. The final piece is a narrow, oval dish. This dish measures 4 inches longand 2 inches across. Its base is clear (not stained red). On the sides are theclassic Bavarian cartouche designs with a chateau and a stag inbetween. T are some scratches on it indicating normal wear and tear. Overall the piece is in good condition. The detail work on these glass pieces is exceptional The set shown came to me along with 3 other Egermann pieces which I am selling in a separate auction. I encourage you to visit my other auction if you'd like to own the complete set. They are beautiful examples of Czech glasswork and would make a show-stopping addition to any collection!
