Antique Egermann Czech Glass Set
You are bidding on a set of 3 antique Czech glass pieces created using Egermann's process in the classic cranberry red color. These Bohemian pieces are excellent examples of the Egermann style. Mr. Friedrich Egermann (1777-1864) invented this glass decorating technology which used the motives of shell, stag, and the chateau with his staining and engraving technique. The red coloring on the surface of the pieces is further decorated by baroque patterns which are typical for the region of North Bohemia and are exemplified by the set shown The red staining is a complicated, physical and chemial process during which the elements of silver or copper are thrust into the glass surface at a high temperature causing its tinge several tens of microns under the surface. The staining technique is used in combination with difficult cutting work that divides the compact stained surface into individual panels which are further decorated by engraving. The engraving and cutting processes give the glass a beautiful and subtle texture. This set includes 3 pieces of antique Egermann glass. T he first piece is the stunning vase which measures a little over 6 inches tall. Its basemeasures 3 1/4 inches in diameter and its top is 4 1/2 inches across. This piece is in excellent condition. It features stylized grapes along its upper third and a very simple and elegant stitch design on the bottom of its base. I only found one very small, hard to notice scratch towards the top. This vase is exceptional for showcasing its deep, ruby red color. The next piece is a jar with a removable top. On the sides are the classic Bavarian cartouche design with a chateau on one side and a stag on the other. The bottom of the container is clear (not stained red). With its top on it measures about 4 1/2 inches tall and about 2 3/4 inches in diameter. Overall it is in very good condition with a few scratches on the bottom and very small indentations on the top and sides of the knob of the lid. When held to the light t are a few places w t is clear when it should be red. I'm not sure if this happened when it was created or was from normal wear later. The lid fits on the container but not snugly, sometimes it slips a little to one side or the other. I feel this enhances its handmade, antique feel. The final piece of this amazing set is a dish with a clear part extending from the base. It measures a little over 4 inches in diameter and about 4 inches tall. It also features the classic cartouche design with a chateau, a stag, and a hunting dog inbetween. At the top of the clear part t is a small scratch. The bottom of the dish has scratches on it (see photo). Overall the dish is in good condition. The pieces shown came to me along with 4 other Egermann pieces which I am selling in a separate auction. I encourage you to visit my other auction if you'd like to own the complete set. They are beautiful examples of Czech glasswork and would make a show-stopping addition to any collection!
