You are bidding on a clarinet in Bb made of boxwood and horn by the French maker Henri Pourcelle, with the makers' stamp on the barrel, top joint, bottom joint, and bell. This particular clarinet is in good shape, having just been serviced and tuned by English clarinet virtuoso Alan Hacker. The boxwood of this clarinet is in excellent shape. T was at one point a crack in the top joint (see pictures) , but this has been filled, and all of the joints are now airtight. T are no other defects to the boxwood. The clarinet is made of boxwood as said above, with ferrules made of black horn. T is a small chip in the ferrule on the lower joint, but this does not take away from the beauty of the instrument or the playability of the clarinet. The 10 brass keys are polished, padded with new leather pads, and all seal well. The tone holes on this instrument are undercut, meaning that this instrument was intended for actual playing by a discerning musician. The key layout is as follows. Basic five keys, with the addition of throat Ab, throat F, chalumeau Eb, left hand C#/G#, and low Bb/clarinet F. The additional keys are mounted with brass pillars and the basic five are mounted in the boxwood itself, showing that this instrument is a transition between the clarinets of the 18th century and those of the later 19th century, perfect for performing the music of Crusell, Weber, late Beethoven, Hummel, and Mendelssohn. I have performed on this clarinet in performances of the Stamitz concerti and the Mendelssohn sonata, and and quite impressed with the sound of this old piece of wood. This clarinet comes with a mouthpiece, which takes a standard Bb clarinet reed, and plays a very even scale with little intonation problems. This is a great clarinet for a musician just starting to learn to period clarinet, or for a collector of antique instruments, as t is no warpage to the bore or the exterior of the instrument, and the quality of the instrument is very high.
