You are looking at an absolutely stunning Art Nouveau / Art Deco Book Rack that was made by Bradley & Hubbard. Highly regarded by curators, collectors and antique dealers, the Bradley & Hubbard Manufacturing Company, better known as simply B&H, was one of the largest producers of decorative and functional iron and brass pieces in the early 20th century.

This antique sliding book rack was created in the early 1920s to commemorate and honor two famed English authors and philosophers, Samuel Johnson and Sir Francis Bacon. Each solid brass side face features one quote from each of the men, and both quotes deal with the enlightening power of reading and knowledge:

" Reading Maketh A Full Man,

Writing An Exact Man.

Histories Make Men Wise,

Poets Witty."

The design of this brilliant piece is very much a mix of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. Framing the two insightful quotes are large, curvaceous stalks that sprout blooming flowers and leaves. These flowing plants rise up to the curved arch at the top of the piece, w a large deco-esque medallion is centered. , the face of an old, god-like gentleman is depicted, with wild, windblown strands of hair. Behind him, large sun bursts dramatically radiate outward at sharp angles. Just lovely!

This piece is in good condition with some wear that should be expected from a piece some 80 years old. The beautiful brass side faces have worn only lightly and have darkened in some areas over the decades. Definitely no major flaws, defects, or signs of mishandling. Just a near-perfect B&H book rack!

Larger than most pieces, this sliding bookrack is one that expands to a whopping 25 ¾" and measures 14" contracted. Each of the side faces measures 6" Wide and 6 ¾" Tall. This piece is collapsible as well for easy transport and storage. Also, one side face is marked on the bottom edge, "Bradley & Hubbard Mfg. Co." with their typical triangle logo.

Reading was and still is a cherished pastime, but in today's modern world, this rack can easily store a number of objects, such as DVD 's, CD's, and even some VHS Cassettes. No matter how you choose to use it, t is no doubt that this authentic Bradley and Hubbard item will continue to grow in value and appeal! It is a must have for B&H and bookend collectors!
