Large brass antique 8 x 10 portrait lens. Engraved on the side is GATCHEL'S PORTRAIT LENS series II, F-5, 8 x 10, GATCHELS PHOTO STOCK HOUSE, Birmingham, Ala 121. Measures 8-1/2" in length, 4-1/2" outside diameter at the top, and 3-13/16ths diameter at the bottom (closest to the film plane). Mounting flange appears to be 4-1/2" inside diameter and 5-1/2 outside diameter and has one minor slight dip in it (see pic). The lens, otherwise seems in very good condition. I am not a camera guy. I received this lens about 25 years ago from a friend and it has been sitting on a shelf ever since. I have never attempted to use it. The lenses look scratch free and clear to my untrained eye. The aperture adjustment works fine and the whole lens breaks down easily into several parts and nothing is stuck. The plating looks like gold and is in only fair condition. The end or top of the lens is perfectly round with no damage. The aperture adjustments are 1.5 - 2 - 4 - 8 - 16 - 32 - 64 and marked on the adjustment ring. The aperture is in very good condition and has no damage The inside (closest to film plane) lens retainer ring has a couple of dings. (see pic) I'm am not sure of the age but I would guess late 1800's.
