I had this device for several years before I knew what it was. Antique brass clockwork bottle jack. These were used in the kitchen in the 19th century over the open fire to rotate food, generally meat while cooking. Inside the brass body is a clockwork mechanism which is wound with a key just like a mantle clock. An almost identical example is illustrated in the book 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles by Linda Franklin (see black and white photo). Brass body in VG condition with a few dings. Clockworks is intact but I don't know if it runs. I don't have a key to go with it but it should take a regular clock key. It is missing the brass bail or hook at the top w you hang it (see photos). Stamped "SALTER, 25 WARRANTED" (see photo). Overall GD-VG condition. Buyer pays actual shipping costs, never any packing or handling charges.
