Antique European/Turkish Brass Pepper Mill/Coffee MillThis auction is for an antique Turkish coffee mill from Europe. These mills have recently been highlighted/touted by Martha Stewart (and other famous chefs) as excellent pepper mills. Function/Use: Use to grind coffee for espresso and cappuccino. The piece consists of four (4) parts: The cast iron handle with a brass finial, the grinding chamber cap, the grinding chamber with the cart-iron grinding mechanism and the catch chamber. The coffee beans (or pepper corns) are place in the top and by turning the hinged crank handle, the coffee is ground and caught in the lower part. The grind size of the coffee can be adjusted by means of a screw inside the receptacle chamber. Structure/Composition: Made of brass and cast iron (the central turn shaft And the crank handle are hand-forged). The grinding mechanism is secured by two (2) metal screws. The grinder is a smaller size than typical and weighs only 10 ounces (~300 grams). This is likely a field version for use by soliders or campers Wear-and-Tear: The piece is well used. The grinding mechanism function perfectly. The base is a bit dented. T are a couple of spots of verdigris on the side, but nothing that will not polish off. The mechanism needs cleaning if you plan to use it for pepper. Approximate Age: 1800sCountry/Region of Origin: read more
