DESCRIPTION: This auction is for an Antique Briar & Silver Cap Filigree Wedding or Alpine Pipe. The shank is Wild Cherry wood branch. The mouthpiece is Cow Horn. The cap is hinged to lift off for filling and lighting. I have installed a new cork gasket to allow the shank to fit tight. The Chain and Tassel bobbles, Cap and Shank Ring are all Sterling Silver. The shank end cap is Nickel Silver. The pipe has been smoked but my guess is sometime when it was new. Again, I guess, this pipe was made in Europe in the late 1800’s. The plaque on the front has what looks like the initials of the wedding party, X. & P. The flowers around the base of the cap look like Pansies and/or Forget Me Knots. T is an Alpine Mountain Goat standing in the center of the cap top. The briar bowl has some standard wedding pipe raised ribs flowing up & around the base. I’ve cleaned the pipe inside and out and have tried to polish the silver the best I can. The interior if the pipe is lined with a tin liner that extends down 2/3’s of the way to the bottom from the top. 3 nails are holding the cap in place. This is standard for this type of pipe. The front nail is an after market addition and the hole for it was not drilled large enough so the nail when it was placed caused a small split in the surface of the briar that runs under the plaque.
