This ANTIQUE factory 5 digit counting machine works perfectly and is enclosed in a heavy (almost 3 lb) cast iron case nicely embossed : TRADE THE BRISTOL COUNTER REG. U.S. MARK PAT. 1891 PAT OFF. THE ROOT CO. BRISTOL CONN.U.S.A The case measures 8" long (11" if you include activating lever), 3 3/4" wide and 1 1/2" deep. The numbered dials are very clear and bright (SEE LAST TWO PHOTOS WITH COVER REMOVED) . T is an original celluloid(?) plastic protector/sealer clear strip inside the cover over the numbers which has become brownish and cloudy with age. It could be easily removed to make the numbers much brighter and cleaner looking (or replace it with a new thick plastic mylar strip). It will count accurately from 00000 to 99999 advancing with each pull of the lever. The numbered dials can be set back to 00000 (or to whatever other number you want) with a standard #6 or #7 clock key ( NOT INCLUDED) by turning the arbors which protrude thru the top cover. T are old paint remnants on the sides and bottom which could be easily removed. Originally it was probably painted black. No paint on top face now. A great addition to your turn of the century industrial collection or calculator/counter collection. HISTORICAL NOTE: In 1928 the ROOT CO merged with the VEEDER CO to form ROOT-VEEDER CO, which (I believe) still makes counters to read more
