Antique Bronze Madonna Wall Plaque Hi, the item got listed before we were ready for it to. The pictures don't blow up really big, so you can't see the true detail of this piece. T is a lot better detail on it than apppears t now. So I am going to take some additional pictures and add them to the auction so you can see the nice work I apologize for not being better prepared with the auction. This is probably some Victorian or slightly later bronze plaque that was a copy of some classic Renaissance type of design. If not, it was made as an original during the same time period. Either way it makes little difference as it is a lovely mass produced piece of bronze artwork. It is guaranteed to be vintage somew between the late 1800s and the 1920s. Judging by its style though I would say it was probably earlier, but with the religious motif it could have been later too so I will leave the door open a little It is most likely European in origin. If you look closely at the back, t is a lot of age on it. It is very rough and almost weatd like it was outside or faced some elements. T is some build up of brown oxidation and some green oxidation t as well that most likely came with age. The edges are rough and you can see the impression of w the image was pressed into the bronze. The front part of the piece is so much different however. T is a very smooth polished lustre to the woman's face and her neck. This piece has a great patina also indicating some age. The background of the plaque appears to be hand hammered dots that create a distinct texture that offsets the smoothness of the Madonna's face. Her hair, dress and tiera are impressed in fantastic detail and are raised, like the Madonna's face, in relief work to create several different layers of texture. This is very effective as the face, the hair, the dress and the bacground all stand out even though they are all done in the same bronze color. So this is a nice piece with a lot of quality to it, that was probably a nicer part of something else larger at one point in time like a church or something ceremonial. With the various relief work in the bronze, the width of the piece varies. The piece is fairly 3 dimensional with the impression being raised and lowered to create the depth seen in the plaque. The thickness of the metal itself is about 1/20 of an inch while the raised parts can vary to just over 1/4 inch for some of the relief work on the whole torso, the face, her head and the tiera. T is also a frame that goes around the entire edges of the piece that we also didn't photograph very well. The frame has 3 levels to it with one being bevelled and goes down about 1/4 to the dimpled background to give the piece its depth for the raised relief work. The height of the piece is 10 inches and the width is a little more than 7 1/4 inches. The outer edge is a little rough all around, so considering how finished some parts of this piece are, I would assume that this peice was encased in something to cover the edges. T is a slight tear in the metal that does show up in the photos on the left hand side of her tiara. It is on the frame and does not go into the design. You can barely feel it. If the piece was framed it would not show up. As the other edges around the plaque are irregular and unfinished, it would be appropriate to frame the plaque and hang it. I hope this answers some of the questions you may have about this lovely piece of bronze and I will also put up pictures that blow up bigger, so you can see some of the more subtle features in much greater detail over the next few days.
