This is an antique oval plaque made of bronze apparently originally designed for mounting on an exterior wall. One of the two original screw holes (the lower) is presently blocked by the remnants of a bronze screw. There is a lovely greenish patina on the back of the piece, a testament to its age. Given its design and condition, I would hazard to guess that it dates from the early nineteenth or late eighteenth century. It is in lovely antique condition, with two small joint cracks between the outside frame of oak leaves and acorns on the right (dexter) side and the center frame surrounding the heraldic coat of arms--these imperfections may date from the foundry, or might be the result of prolonged exposure to the elements. On the left (sinister) side, the outside frame is made to resemble what I think are acanthus leaves and berries.Despite research, I have been unable to determine what the original purpose of this medallion was. It is 11" high and 8.5" wide at its broadest points, and so large enough to be seen from a reasonable distance, so it may have been one of those signs which told responding colonial fire companies whether the house was a subscriber to their services.
