This is a listing for: Antique hand-made Burmese silver box - eight-sided with removable lid. This piece belonged to my great great great uncle's parents who were missionaries in Rangoon, Burma in the late 19th / early 20th centuries... ... so it's safe to say that the piece is at least 100 years old, since it has been in my family for about that long. The box has some writing on the bottom (see photo 12)... but I can't read Burmese script, so I have no idea if this is a signature, a place name or something else. The decorative elements have been created through: Repoussé (hammering from the reverse side - see photos 7-8) Chasing (indenting, grooving the front of the work) Punching / perforation Decorative motifs include: Dancer & vines on lid (photos 6-9) Birds & vegetation on three of eight sides (photos 1, 3, 4) Mammal (perhaps a Burmese ferret badger) & vegetation on one side (photo 2) Circles & crosses on the four chamfered corners (photo 5) Condition: Very good vintage condition. The box shows tarnishing typical of silver, and I can't see another metal showing through the silver... ... so I don't think this is silver plated, but made of some kind of silver alloy.
