Elegant Bausch & Lomb monocular compound microscope circa 1894. (Note-This description has been revised in order to correct the date of manufacture stated in the original listing) All lacquered brass construction on a heavy tripod base with an unusual clear glass specimen stage. The microscope stands approximately 16 inches high in the extended mode, and the main body tube is mounted atop a four inch brass pillar via a compass joint which allows the complete optical assembly to tilt, over a range of 90 degrees. T is an inner sliding body tube extender which increases the body length by up to 3 inches. A removable Nickel plated brass slide holder is spring mounted to the top of the main glass stage and may be positioned to provide continuous X-Y slide manipulation. I am told this particular design was pioneered by Gundlach and it is known as the Bausch and Lomb Universal Model. The microscope is signed Bausch and Lomb Optical Co. Rochester, New York (engraved on the glass stage) Both objectives and the eyepiece are also signed. Serial number 15956 is stamped on the glass stage support (brass) platform. This same serial number is also stamped on the specification card which is attached to the inside of the carrying case door. All mechanical functions operate smoothly, including the main focussing rack and pinion, and also the unique Gundlach fine focus mechanism which apparently is a key feature of the Universal and Professional models. Minor spotting is visible on the plano-concave mirror but it is perfectly usable. The gimbaled mirror is mounted on a swinging arm attached to a calibrated drum showing the angular position of the mirror support arm. The instrument does not have all the many options which were available , but it appears to be complete, and it is fully functional. Optics are very good and produce bright clear images. T is some spotting of the lacquer and minor marks on the base but overall the microscope is most impressive. Nice burled Walnut carrying case (no key) with accessory drawer. One of the most historically important and desirable Bausch and Lomb microscopes which is bound to increase in value. Dimensions (inches) Height (extended) 16.5. Base 7 X 7. Weight including case: 12#. Sold without reserve, as-is. Careful packing shipping and insurance will be $48. for inland USA. Cannot ship outside USA, sorry. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions.Thanks.
