This is an AWESOME find! Circa 1900 Oak cash register, it's more like a cash drawer with a counter on top that activates the unlocking of the drawer as you put the little metal tabs into the slot. Once the tab is put into the slot, you cannot take it out, it locks into the top and slides on two rails toward the back, tabulating until the very top panel gets unlocked and the tabs are removed for counting. These were usually used in barber shops, each barber had a color and when a haircut or shave was finished they inserted the correct amount of tin numbers that slid down 2 wire rails. The top panel is missing the front lock mechanism, but the back lock is in tact. The drawer locks back upon closing. Made of solid oak with a brass cast advertising panel and window to view the tabs from the front as they go in. Measuring 13" across the front (bottom), 14" long and 9" tall in the very middle. Wood construction is solid and without any damage other than normal wear to the finish, mostly on the inside of the drawers where the coins go. Has two wooden trays holding approximately 100 tabs, I haven't counted them. Wooden tab holders are fragile, not damaged but they want to come apart when you handle them, so they could probably use to be glued, but not by me. They measure approximately 6" x 5" each and the tabs measure approximately 1" x 2" each, and the tabs bear the patent date of this unit. I have only ever seen one like it online and they wanted 2000 for it and claimed that fewer than a dozen existed. I am not sure of the historical aspects of this piece but do know it has been a hard one to research. PLEASE NOTE: I do have the key that locks the top but it has been declared MIA since we moved out of our antique store. I will keep the buyer's information until it turns up and can be united with the unit but this is no guarentee. I will do my best to keep my eyes out for it but this unit is being sold WITHOUT THE KEY. Buyer pays postage and $20 handling which includes the proper insurance.
