This fabulous piece has had me intrigued for the decade I've owned it. Consequently, any info anyone can provide would be appreciated. Handcarved with a clearly defined shape reminiscent of a swan or long necked bird, it has a spectacular long rat-tail type treatment along the back, while the bowl, both front and back, appears to be deliberately carved in concentric ripple like designs. I say deliberately, for it does not extend up the neck of the piece. The bowl, when viewed with the head and neck facing you dead on, is immediately recognizable as a finely floating bird shape. Now it gets confusing for me. Are what I always assumed were old chips to the "shoulders" when viewed that way actually deliberate, wing like treatments? I have no idea, but given the fact that the actual bottom edge of the ladle is intact (w you'd expect damage to be) it made me wonder. Next wonder point: the patina is fabulous - smooth as could be, but I think - and this is only a non-professional thought - that it may have had an old waxing at some point. Last interesting note - literally: on the back of the long neck has always been an old note beneath a bit of scotch tape that reads: "Soup Ladle Pennsylvania Purchased 1963 xox Mother." Size is approximately 8.75" long with a bowl that measures approximately 4.25" by 4.25". T is also a slight .75" indentation on the back of the head. So the question is - might this be North American Indian? Is it actually burl and not deliberately carved? I honestly haven't a clue - and never have - but I do know it is a breathtakingly beautiful object, and that in itself is enough. Satisfaction is guaranteed as I will have no problem living with this forever if need be.
