This tall carved wood statue represents St. Sebastian, an early Christian youth who is often represented as pierced by multiple arrows. In art he appears tied to a tree or post, stripped to his loincloth, and bristling with arrows. This statue was originally given a coat of gesso and paint and was given a gilded loincloth. All but a few traces have disappeared (his eyes and eyebrows, and flecks of gilding). He is now very dark and mottled, from age and smoke (apparently) and from the flaking of the gesso. His arms have disappeared, along with five toes and the tip of his nose. But his ribs and abdomen, neck, face and remaining toes are all well modeled. He shows a few holes where arrows have broken off (below right pectoral, left rib cage, near navel, left thigh and shin, beside right shin, etc?). He wears a serene expression, eyes gazing heavenward. I suspect the work is Spanish, late 18th-early 19th century. Height 17 1/2”, length of base 6”.Overseas buyers: please contact me for international rates.
