This is some type of relic from an altar from a Catholic Church. It is antique, I believe it to be bronze. It is 12" long and 7" wide and weighs 2lbs. It is very heavy. It is a Chalice (Communium Cup) with a Host (Body of Christ) above it. It is circled by grapes and thorns. The letters IHS are on the communion host which means "In Hoc Sacramenturn" Meaning In This Sacrament. So this had to have been on an altar, now I am sure it has been. I have gotten help from so many wonderful people who have told me this is a tabernacle door and the hole is a lock. It also has been blessed. So to find it at someone's estate sale in a crawlspace box, I was rather shocked. It is beautiful and very old. The back of it bears the numbers from the forgery of 386. That is evidenced on pictures 3 and 5. I am going to offer this for auction, but I am still curious where this would have been on an altar if there is a EM out there or Priest. I am also interested as to why if a church was torn down, or burned down, why would a blessed object just be tossed in a box? Anyone with answers please email me at . Thank you so much and . If you'd like me to find out the actual metal, I'd have to take it to someone. So if anyone would want that or more pictures, that is fine. Just let me know who I would take it to to determine the metal typ or a way for me to do it at home :D. I do believe from the design, going back to some old photo's of churches that this is from the 19th Century, and no younger, perhaps older. Thanks for stopping in! Shipping cost includes insurance, weight and signature confirmation because of the historical significance of this item. Thank you. Thank you to everyone who has mailed me and helped me put this puzzle together. Now let's get this relic to somewhere where it will be honored and cherished! Keep those mails coming. The history is fascinating! :)
