This Caucasian Daghestan is an outstanding top collectors rug from the late 19th century. If you follow the Caucasus mountains down to the southern end, the most north-easterly province is that of Daghestan. Daghestan is inhabited mostly by Chechens and Daghestans although their is also some Mongol and Kurdish influences. Modern Daghestaan is bordered on the north by Russia, on the west by Georgia and on the south by Azerbaijan. Daghestan is known for its fine quality rugs and in the 17th and 18th century they produced many long corridor rugs with interlocking rows of multi-colored stepped octagons. This rug, although not that old, seems to be influenced by those earlier long rugs. Note the rows of interlocking archaic elements/medallions which stretch across the width. In between these rows, and floating in an indigo-blue field, are various rows of colorful lozenges, diamond designs, stars, snowflakes, arrows and other types of antiquated design motifs. All of these devises are brightly colored and geometric in character. The border which surrounds the central design theme is one of the most beautiful that I have ever seen. Oversized interlocking elements, in bright red and blue, alternate from a diamond design at the top and bottom to an interlocking mushroom motif along the sides of the rug. The border is very striking, the piece is very well executed, and the rug is simply beautiful.
The condition of this rug is very good for its age. The wool is high quality and only vegetable dyes appear to have been used. The pile is medium-short and even throughout the rug, the salvages are in very good condition and the ends are intact and secure and appear to me to be original. There have been some repairs done in the field and also, here and there, some small areas were repiled. There is some very minor color variation in some of the repiled areas and the brown colors exhibit some very minor corrosion. At the top of the rug, on both the left and right hand side of the salvage, the rug was rewoven in two small areas. The repairs have been professionally done and are not visible from the front of the rug. To the viewer, the rug looks original. Additionally, about 18 inches up from the bottom right side of the salvage, there is a very minor stain, see picture #3, which is barely visible and does not distract from the beauty of this rug. This rug is, without a doubt a fine collectable piece. This rug is part of my private collection and is priced to sell quickly. All reasonable offers will be seriously considered. PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER RUGS FROM MY COLLECTION. I will be adding more rugs weekly. Please Note: I am not a dealer. I am a collector. Due to economic conditions I am liquidating a large number of my rugs. I am not an authority on rugs. I try to describe the type and quality as well as the general condition of the rug as best as I can. If you have specific questions please feel free to enquire. I do not accept returns so it is always best to inquire before you bid so that you know what you are bidding on and will be happy with your purchase. It is important to note that rugs that have a wool foundation, are quite different from rugs with a cotton foundation. These rugs quite often have irregular shape and can lay quite different on the floor than a rug with a cotton foundation. Antique rugs are, due to age, construction, and weaving technique, more delicate than other rugs and should generally be used in areas with less traffic. Generally I sell/ship to North America only. On occasion I will sell internationally but be aware that international shipping can be very costly so inquire before bidding. An additional consideration for international bidders is the Customs charges you might incur.
