This is a very nice antique Caucasian Karabagh rug which dates to the last quarter of the 19th century. Karabagh is a mountainous region between Azerbaijan, to the east, and Armenia to the west. The area is mostly Armenian in the lowlands and Kurds in the mountains but it is historically part of Azerbaijan. Karabagh rugs are often confused as Kazak rugs. Technically this is not a Kazak rug but nonetheless it exhibits many of the same or similiar characteristics as Kazak rugs. This piece has a central diamond medallion surrounded by hooked lozenges. The medallion is set in a deep blue field with Octagonal lozenges at the top and various stylized geometric flower representations at the bottom. The border is a simple but elegant band of interlocking lozenges. This is quite a nice work of art and is in very good condition for its age.
This rug has has a wool foundation with high quality and tight wool knots. This rug is very attractive, has excellent craftsmanship, and very high quality wool with all natural vegetable dyes. The design of this rug is very striking and the colors very complimenting. The detail on this rug is extremely nice. Both ends and salvages are complete, intact and secure and the rug has low and even pile height. There appears to have been only minor well done repairs made to this rug: i.e. re-piling, repairs to the salvage and strengthening a few weak spots. I noticed only one small weak area that will eventually need repair but at this point is quite serviceable. There is some minor corrosion to the browns and there is a wee bit of foundation showing. This rug is part of my private collection and is priced to sell quickly. All reasonable offers will be seriously considered. PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER RUGS FROM MY COLLECTION. I will be adding more rugs weekly. Please Note: I am not a dealer. I am a collector. Due to economic conditions I am liquidating a large number of my rugs. I am not an authority on rugs. I try to describe the type and quality as well as the general condition of the rug as best as I can. If you have specific questions please feel free to enquire. I do not accept returns so it is always best to inquire before you bid so that you know what you are bidding on and will be happy with your purchase. It is important to note that rugs that have a wool foundation, are quite different from rugs with a cotton foundation. These rugs quite often have irregular shape and can lay quite different on the floor than a rug with a cotton foundation. Antique rugs are, due to age, construction, and weaving technique, more delicate than other rugs and should generally be used in areas with less traffic. Generally I sell/ship to North America only. On occasion I will sell internationally but be aware that international shipping can be very costly so inquire before bidding. An additional consideration for international bidders is the Customs charges you might incur.
