Here is an antique retractable for a chatelaine. The 2-1/2" long pencil is surrounded in twisted mother of pearl and appears to be gold plated. It is completely functional, has an opening for an o ring to attach. There is no damage to the finish though there is darkening in the grooves around the picecs of mop, probably a little dirt.
