Description :Up for auction is a print of an original photograph(ca. 1880) taken by Greenfield, Massachusetts photographer B.F. Popkins . The print photo is of the St. James Episcopal Church in Greenfield, MA . This print was individually processed and handmade by Samuel Pettengill of Greenfield, MA on fine fiber base paper. A copy negative was made of the original stereoptic photograph obtained from the archives of the Greenfield Historical Society. The image was manipulated in printing to achieve greater clarity and contrast. The chestnut frame is made from the original chestnut beams from under the church which were removed in the 1996 capital fund project. The frame was sealed with fine tung oil and assembled with an acid-free mat by the Rev. Frederick E. Emrich in recognition of the 150 years since the layering of the cornerstone of the new church on May 4, 1847. Rev. Emrich put the print photo and frame together in 1997. The back side of the frame has a paper attached also with the tung oil which explains in great detail about this piece (provenance, history, process). (See Photo) The print measures 6 1/2" x 4 1/2" inside the matting. The frame measures 10 15/16" tall, 8 7/8" wide, and 1" deep. Condition :The attached paper on the back side of the frame is slightly torn at the bottom right. That is the only wear that I see. read more
