Up for auction today is a really great antique wooden box! This box was invented by John D. Chevalier of New York to house dental tools and instruments (see the scan I've included from "The Dental Office Pictorial History" by Richard A. Glenner, DDS). This box has various compartments for housing all of those spooky looking dental tools of the era! Besides the hinged lid, there is a removable tray under the lid, as well as a drawer in the front that opens with removal of a brass pin, and side drawers that also open by removing a pin. Each of the side drawers also have a tray that slides out from under them. Sadly, not all of the original divisions are left in these compartments, but some are. The box measures approx. 17 1/8" long x 9 7/8" wide x 6 3/4" tall. The box is trimmed in nickle plated metal trim. It has a mirror inside the top lid, though that mirror looks rough. It also appeared to have mirrored pieces in the center of the tray under the lid, but most of the mirror sections are gone, as is a piece of the trim that held it in. The outside of the box looks good, though, and if the insides were cleaned up, this would make a great storage box or conversation piece - or restore the box back to its former dental tool glory! The lid has a locking hing to help keep it open, and it has a key lock, though the key is missing. Two of the three side drawers pretty well pop out when the pin is removed - the right side drawer sticks a little. The compartments that slide out of the bottom of the side drawers open fine, but wear to the sliding tracks sometimes allow them to fall loose. The instrument slots were originally covered in fabric, but some of that is now missing. Like I said, it needs some cleaning or restoration, but would still make a great antique wooden box! Check out my pictures and email any questions. Thanks for looking!
