ANTIQUE China BIRK RAWLINS Coffee Set ROSE SWAGS Cobalt Blue CARLTON 1900 - 1916 Victorian and Vintage This is a unique opportunity to acquire a six place setting antique coffee set that was produced between 1900 - 1916. The set was crafted by Birks, Rawlins & Co at the Vine Pottery in Stoke, Staffordshire. The pottery became part of Carlton China in 1933. Company Information - L.A. Birks & Co. was founded in 1894 and in 1900 the business changed its name to Birks Rawlins & Co. In 1928 Wiltshaw & Robinson purchased Birks Rawlins & Co, when the latter found themselves in financial difficulty. They registered a brand new company, Birks Rawlins & Co. Ltd, with the intention of continuing to manufacture china at The Vine Pottery. Birks Rawlins had produced a huge range of fine bone china using the trade name ‘Savoy China’, and Wiltshaw & Robinson made good use of their patterns and shapes, adding many of their own patterns until production finally ceased in 1933 with the final closure of Birks Rawlins as a going concern. The set has a white base and is decorated with the most beautiful hand painted floral swags - roses in shades of pink framed by green foliage; there is an additional rose swag on the interior brim of the cups. The brims feature a deep cobalt blue decor which is embellished with gold hand painted patterns alternating between ornate swirls and a trellis & star pattern. The cups have an elegant handle that is finished with a gold trim. The rims of all the pieces are also finished with fine gold trims. The set consist of six coffee cups and six saucers. It would look especially good in a vintage, country cottage or shabby chic setting. It looks fabulous on display!!! A gorgeous example of an antique china coffee set!!! Condition - The set is in good condition - there are no cracks, chips or crazing. The colours are still clear and vibrant and the gold designs and trims are also in good condition with on apparent wear. A couple of the cups have feint marks under the glaze around the lower section of the body - not too noticeable; there are a few cobalt blue paint spots here and there; one cup has had a repair to the handle - again not easily apparent and the handle is totally stable. This is a very old set, crafted at a time when perfect procedures were not in place so please bear this in mind when purchasing. Dimensions - The cups measure 2.6" (6.5 cm) deep and just short of 2.6" (6 cm) wide. The saucers measure 4.6" (11.5 cm) wide.
