An intricately carved Chinese carving of a phoenix flying through a garden of peony flowers. The carving is very well executed with a high degree of detail in the raised work of the phoenix as well as the flowers in the garden. The peony is a symbol of wealth and prosperity, while the phoenix represents healing and rebirth. This carving is made from one piece of Chinese elm wood. This carving probably fit into a larger carving or piece of furniture. A Chinese bed, for example, could have been made up of over 100 carvings all fitting together to form a grand kang (raised bed) (see last picture). This precisely carved scene has a gold gilding over a red lacquer base along with a hand painted border. The backside was left unpainted. Having been protected by being incorporated in a larger piece of furniture for over a century, this carving remains in very fine condition with slight areas of loss to the the top boarder (see enlarged pictures). Measuring 16" long by 7 3/4" wide and 1/2" deep (40 x 19.5 x 1.2 cm).
