From the 1780's through the 1800's, drawings of family coats of arms were sent to China to be painted on serving pieces which were then shipped to America or Europe. Generally they were platters, teapots and other serving pieces It is rare to find a tea caddy with an amorial design. This caddy was obviously made for an American customer. The painting is in chinese red, coral, brown, and gilt. The crest is a memorial with an eagle on top. Someone has inscribed Washington in the cartouche, but it does not seem to have been completed because it is faint like it would have been painted over eventually. This piece is in great shape. T is the usual age appropriate wear on the foot and around the base and top rim of the mouth (see photo). The inside is clean. T are no cracks, chips or repairs. It stands 4 1/2" tall, by 3 1/2" wide and 3" deep. If anyone out t has any more information about this caddy or the crest please email us.
