For auction is presented a wonderful antique Chinese export ox bone puzzle ball on stand. This puzzle ball was produced in China around the first half of the 1900s destined for the export market. This object has to be one of the most mysterious items produced in China for hundreds of years with many variations, sizes and materials. This particular style is one that has been very popular since inception, as many people are simply awestruck the first time they have encountered an elephant either in the wild or in a zoo so consequently many objects originating in Asia have incorporated these magnificent animals in thier design themes such as this puzzle ball stand. The stand depicts 3 elephants appearing to be holding or touching thier front feet while holding thier trunks up high to balance the ball. The elephants have inset black eyes with nicely done large floppy ears and are positioned on a thick base then there is a removeable turning underneath and screws into a circular base with a saw tooth leaf edge design. The ball itself is truely amazing and the outer most ball has been worked in very deep relief with great undercutting and pierced reticulation depicting 3 seperate dragons writhing around having also black inset eyes and are surrounded with clouds and smoke. The ball is quite heavy for the size due to the experienced carver as he has removed little material inbetween each layer resulting in a tightly packed interior of (11) separate balls making (12) with the outside ball. Each inner ball has nicely pierced stars and circles and another unusual thing is that there is not any missing balls or even a tiny chip off any and I tried to show a glimpse of the layers when lined up but it is really tough to do. I have taken a photo of the ball along side a regulation baseball so that you can appreciate its size which is a bit over 2-1/2" in diameter. The condition is excellent with the only tiny fault being the center ring on the circular base where a short area of the threaded edge has lifted up a bit and hardly noticeable, but other than that there are no chips, cracks. losses or repairs just a superb Chinese antique that is sure to boggle the mind of any newcomer to these type objects. Sizes: Height including stand 6-1/4" x Height of stand only 4-1/4" x Diameter of ball 2-5/8". If you are a collector of Asian antiques or for that matter any type of antiques this is one of those items that has a place in any collection. Bid to win as you will be happy you did.
