This is an antique hand carved cinnabar egg. Possibly used for darning. I don't know how old it is but it was made using traditional methods of starting with a form and coating it with layer after layer of liquid cinnabar. Once this dries and hardens it is very hard. Then more layers are added until the requisite thickness is achieved. Then the object is carved using stone tools because steel tools dull too quickly. You can see the layers in the cut areas. This egg has peonies carved on two sides and a cross shaped blossom on the other two sides. The top is carved with a blossom and the bottom has a chinese symbol. Excellent condition. No chips, cracks or repairs. The stand is not included. It measures 2 7/8" by 1 3/4". It weighs 38 1/2 grams. Very nice. No Reserve
