For your bidding consideration in this auction, what we take to be, an Antique Chinese Ivory Carved Box Featuring a Bull Elephant Battling a Pride of Tigers! This uniquely dramatic, refined, expressive, and detailed naturalistic carving measures 5 3/8 inches high, and 4 inches across the greatest width. It is signed on the underside of the lid with what appears to be a lady bug, and on the underside of the bottom with what appears to be a cricket. T are some curious facts to be noted about these signatures. The central element of the cricket appears to have been incised right though, and then re-set like a gem back into the ivory, while leaving 2 minute pinholes though either end of the lozenge - perhaps to admit air. The round part of the body of the ladybug appears to have been treated similarly, but appears to have been removed and replaced as a fillet, with a tiny hole going through representing the insects head on the underside, and being barely noticeable coming though the top. I examined this with a microscope, and it appears that a tiny black thing was also placed inside - though this may be some kind of residue from age. Somebody went to a lot of trouble to do this. Very peculiar. I would love to have some information about these things from a knowledgeable ebayer, and thank you in advance! Condition: this box shows several age cracks, with the worst being under the belly of the elephant, and the bottom is detached, but clearly original to the piece, and could be easily restored and the bottom edge of the crack closed - if one wished. The top appears to have shrunken slightly, and so tends to fall into the box - various simple measures could be taken to remedy this. The worst problem, in my opinion, is that it appears as though a handle to the top - possibly figural, of a triumphant elephant- is missing, as attested by the peg-in-hole remains to the left of the tiger in that picture. However one can't be sure. Lastly t is variegated patination, with some rubbing to high points and t, as well as other signs of use and age, presenting extremely well. Additional pictures available via e-mail on request. Good luck bidding on this exceptionally well executed and rare piece of art!EBAY POLICY FORBIDS INTERNATIONAL BIDDERS ON IVORY ITEMS, AND/OR SHIPPING THEM OUT OF THE UNITED STATES.
