Jadeite Jade Foo Dogs Foo Dogs are the ancient sacred dogs of China. They are the temple guardians that kept the evil spirits away. Their history can be traced as early as the Han Dynasty (208 BC - 221 AD). The Foo Dog is also known as the Celestial Dog and the Happiness Dog. It is a symbol of energy and value. Foo dogs are art infused with meaning. This amazing pair of beautifully carved Foo Dogs are Jadeite Jade. They were masterfully carved from a single boulder of lightly mottled snowflake green semi translucent Jadeite Jade. Of the two types of Jade, Nephrite and Jadeite, this is the harder, scarcer, and more valuable variety. The larger of the Foo Dogs is a male with his paw resting on a sphere that represents the Earth. A smaller Foo Dog cub is playing next to him. This is an amazing carving in detail, design, and artistry. That it was carved from a single Jadeite boulder is even more amazing. The sculpture is 7" long, 4-1/2" wide, and 4" high (measurements do not include the stand). The carving without the stand weighs 2 pounds 4 ounces. This is a replacement stand in "as is" condition (missing a small piece of one of the feet). The carving is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. The piece dates from the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), early 20th Century. This pair is from the Estate of a very prominent Tucson collector affiliated with the Tucson Museum of Art for over 2 decades.
