This is a rare antique Oriental Chinese Japanese Teapot. The teapot is shaped in a 8 sided hexagon and has also 4 triangular panels on the bottom sides. This hand painted teapot has a lot of moriage dots and the flowers are raised above the rest of the tea pot. The lid has a signature and also on the lid and pot is an X showing they match and are not married. The handle is either bronze or brass wire bale wrapped and intricately woven as shown in the picture. I suspect there may have been a piece of material added later to the bottom to protect furniture otherwise I do not know what the + stands for. This rare teapot measures approx. 5 3/4" tall including the lid. It is approx. 6" wide at the widest point. The bronze brass wire bale handle is approx. 9" total. The lid is 2" square. There is wear on the gold gilding around the top, spout as shown.
The hand painting is absolutely beautiful, crisp and clear. I have carefully examined this and found the tiniest flea bite on the inside rim, otherwise this is a superb piece. Inside, where the handle mounts are there is a tiny crack that I believe may of happened in the firing of this teapot. It does not go through to the outside. The spout has no cracks or chips.
I had taken this hand painted enameled Asian teapot to a very respectable dealer/ auction company and they could not tell me anything about it. Just that it is old. I have researched and researched this fabulous Oriental teapot and have not been able to find anything comparable. I have looked for the past 5 years to no avail. I believe it is pre 1900, but how old, I don't know.
