This CENTURY OLD wonderful framed two-scene Chinese kesi hand woven silk tapestry is 12.5" X 25." It features four warriors -- two on foot that are brandishing spears; two on horseback. Primary colors are gold, gray, black, and orange. The piece was trimmed with a thick off-white silk mat that separates the two scenes, and then was placed in a thin gold frame. It was probably woven around 1900, but has been protected under glass. All kesi weavings have "slits" that are noticeable between colors, but this one has separations around the horse's saddle and the men's clothing, particularly in the top scene. Other than that, the piece is in good shape, considering its age. Any shadows or dark marks that appear in the photos are simply the reflection of the camera when we took the photos. Kesi pieces are highly collectible, expensive weavings, as they are a rarely practiced art form and are very labor intensive. They take much more time to complete than embroideries. They are valued for their decorative pictorial designs and patterning effects, workmanshiip, and metallic thread. Of special interest is a second kesi piece that we are selling that probably dates to 1950-1960. Two of its three scenes are almost identical to this kesi's two scenes, but the detail on the clouds, the size of the warriors' heads, and a few other subtleties are read more
