ANTIQUE CHINESE MANDARIN HAT BUTTON - OPAQUE WHITE Encrusted gilt metal base Base plate has incised Chinese symbols - see Photo 6) These buttons were attached to the hats worn by the Chinese public officials, the mandarins There were nine different ranks of mandarins, each denoted by the color of their robes and trimmings The first rank wore a red stone; second - red coral; third - sapphire; fourth - opaque blue; fifth - crystal; sixth - opaque white; seventh - plain gold; eighth - decorative gold; ninth - decorative silver The button offered here is in "as is" condition in that it has a separation at the encrusted metal base collar and needs to be restored. The white opaque glass button itself is unblemished.Added 3/31/2011: Further examination on this piece reveals the strong possibility that this is not one original piece, but that a previous owner has taken two separate hat buttons and attempted to make one original hat button out of them. While the two pieces seem to fit together, there is an overlap of the top part onto the base base at a point where about 6 of the small knobby protrusions on the base are covered up.
