ANTIQUE CHINESE PORCELAIN DOUCAI BOWL DECORATED WITH EIGHT BUDDHIST EMBLEMS BAJIXIANG The wheel, conch shell, parasol, canopy, flower, fish, vase and endless knot are Buddhist symbols. Each of them rests on the garlands of the blooming pink lotus. This kind of decorative motif with a Tibetan or Indian origin was first employed on Yuan porcelains; remained popular for centuries and was certainly not lost by the end of the Qing Dynasty in 1911.
Doucai porcelains are precious and eagerly collected by East and West. In the collector's eyes these porcelains are real highlights in Chinese decorative arts and bring great results at auctions of the international famous auction houses. Nabeshima porcelains of Japan and the Doucai porcelains of China are in some way very comparable and both great examples of the Arts of the Far East. We consider our pictures an enormous help with describing our listings. So please, study them carefully and give yourself the time to enlarge them. Also a website supports this auction as can be read below. In our listing and own text you will also find information on shipping, insurance etc. Please, contact us if there are any questions. Beneath each listing we always place a supersized image. a - Description: Magnificent Doucai bowl in bright enamels. Doucai stands for soft colors painted inside the blue underglaze cobalt lines. b - Year of Design: Like often the case, the designs of Chinese porcelain go back to much earlier times. The emblems of buddhism on porcelain are seen since the Yuan dynasty in China. c - Origin: Jingdezhen. d - Year of production: The shallow bowl or deep plate is not marked but we choose for an eighteenth century origin based on what we know of Chinese porcelains and will explain below. e - Material and Technique: Chinese porcelain, meticulously handpainted in blue under the glaze and painted in soft colorful enamels over a somewhat bluish glaze. f - Measurements: Diameter: 20,3 cm. Height: 3 cm. Weight: 330 gr. g - Identification: Absolutely Chinese origin. Small pinholes in the base and body which show antiquity. The footrim is knife-cut. The backside is hardly decorated. The three lotus flowers divided on the exterior is a decorative idea from the middle of the eighteenth century. h - Condition: Very good condition, without restorations. Please study our pictures. We must mention only one very small chip in the exterior rim...this is shown in several images as good as possible. All that is necessary in principle can be found in the listing here.
