is an outstanding compass, Civil War period. I purchased this many years ago along with quite a few related items from the Civil War including canteen, sword, pouches and personal belongings. These were carried by a Union officer family member during the war as related to me by the family. It is pocket watch style with a push button to open the case. The dome glass which is easily replaceable is cracked. I left it that way as it is original. The compass works perfectly. When you close the lid, t is an arm connected to the hinge that locks the needle in place. T are NO dents and the case maintains the original patina. Measures 38mm side to side. T are markings on the inner case..looks like the number 38 and the letter "F". The push button to open the case is missing but will open with a pointer. The pendant bow is missing but again, available through pocket watch parts house. This is how I aquired it and that is how I pass it along. Check out my other listings. Thanks for looking. We always insure our packages. The past has taught us not everyone is honest. We try to start all our auctions at $9.95 or less with no reserve. We do not sell out and end our auctions early , we will give you all time time you need. If we do end an auction, it is a mistake in description. Due to untrackable deliveries and uninsurable packages, we will ONLY ship to countries that we can insure the package. Most countries are OK. If your country can accept an insured package...bid away! Multiple purchases are at no added cost provided the weight and size do not create added expense. Please study the pictures before bidding, ask questions if you are unclear about anything. Be sure the item is what you want before bidding. We describe items to the best of our ability and belief. We have been in the antique and collecting lifestyle for 40+ years. We are not experts in every field. You may know more about certain items than we do. If you have information, share it with us, your knowledge is welcome. This helps all of us on Ebay. In the end, YOU are the judge as to quality and value. We do take returns if we have made a gross error.
