Excellent example of an early antique unique clock. This CLOISTER clock was produced by the NATIONAL MAGNETIC CLOCK CORP. BUFFALO, NY. Serial# 549 Style # 1100. I believe it is a CLOISTER TORSIION PENDULUM CLOCK based on a picture that I found on GOOGLE. This clock is missing the batteries ( the clocks operate with three 1.5 volt dry cell batteries house in the base. ), which are mounted inside the bottom, and the thin wire that holds the heavy Brass Pendulum weights needs to be replaced. The globe and all parts are original. This clock is shown in an un-cleaned condition but all of the Brass would polish up smartly to make an excellent display or collectable piece. The clock stands 9 1/2 inches tall and the base is 6 inches wide. Below is some additional informaiton about these clocks Tiffany. National Magnetic Clocks were made under license with the Tiffany Never-Wind or (NEV-R-WIND) Clock Company, Buffalo, NY. Tiffany Never-Wind Clock was invented by George Steele Tiffany who is best known for the glassed domed torsion pendulum clocks such as the # 1 model pictured below. Tiffany also licensed Niagara and Cloister to make similar clocks domed. The Serial and style numbers can be found on the back on the operational plate. Tiffany was in business from 1901 until around 1920 and made a large number of the domed clocks in three different sizes and styles and few of the National Magnetic or early Tiffany crystal regulator models being made. The pure art deco style of the National Magnetic tends to suggest that they were made at the end of the Tiffany production around 1920 when inexpensive synchronous plug-in clocks took most of this clock market. On March 8, 1904, a patent was granted to George S. Tiffany of Buffalo, N.Y. for an electrically wound clock. The earlier clocks are generally under a glass dome. Though fairly expensive, the "Tiffany Never‑Winds" enjoyed some success, as they are relatively common compared to other pre‑alternating current electrics. Clocks using similar mechanisms are found with the names Cloister Manufacturing Company, Buffalo, N.Y., the National Magnetic Clock Company, New York, N.Y. and the Niagara Clock Company.
