Late 19 th C Anglo Indian Nagina carved Ebony Cane or walking stick This superbly carved ebony cane or walking stick dates to around 1870-80 & sports a myriad of finely carved geometric patterns. It originates from Nagina, a town in the Bijnor District in the United Provinces of Eastern India. The stick is carved in low relief due to the hardness of ebony and is typically fashioned with spirally arranged geometric designs typical of this rigorously Muslim area of British India. The precision of the carving is astounding and all the more so when one considers the primitive tools that were often fashioned by the local blacksmith specifically for these small family run workshops. I shall not even start and try to describe the multitude of traditional patterns on this stick, other than to say that this is a superb example of early Nagina work and that in typical Muslim tradition, there is merely abstract and floral imagery rather that human and faunal depictions. These beautifully executed patterns were all learned and memorised from an early age by each artisan craftsman. This cane is carved in ebony & has an overall length of 36 ”. Condition is excellent with no loss or damage other than a couple of minor nicks around the handle.
